ACTIVITIES

 

1998/1999

The Centre successful hosted and International Conference on Criminology and Criminal Justice in the Caribbean.  There were fifteen panel sessions consisting of approximately fifty paper presentations.  Participants were primarily from the Caribbean, North America and England.


 

1997/1998

During the 1997/1998 academic year the Centre will seek to consolidate its ongoing research, fund-raising and other activities.  In addition, it is actively engaged in the planning of an International Criminology Conference during October 1998 as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the University of the West Indies.


 

1996/1997

During 1996/1997, the Centre hosted a panel discussion on Capital Punishment in Barbados; held three Consultative Committee meetings; hosted a one-day workshop on ongoing Ford Foundation funded Crime Research Projects in Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago;  continued the Criminal Victimization Survey in Barbados;  presented a paper on Victims of Violent Crime in Barbados at the Law and Society Association in St. Louis Missouri, USA.


Ongoing Reseach Activities in which the Centre is directly involved includes:

  • Criminal Victimisation Survey, conducted by Dr. Farley Brathwaite
  • The Social Context of the Crime of Robbery in Barbados by Bertie Hinds, M/Phil/PhD Sociology candidate;
  • Gender and Crime in Barbados, by Janice Farley, MPhil/PhD Sociology candidate; 
  • An evaluation of the Juvenile Justice System in Barbados by Benita Brathwaite, MPhil Sociology candidate.
