ABOUT
THE FACULTY
The
teaching of Social Science subjects: Economics, Political Science and Sociology at the
University of the West Indies, began in 1959 in the Faculty of Arts at the Mona Campus. A Faculty of Social
Sciences was established in 1960, the first graduates emerging in 1962 with Bachelor of
Science degrees in Economics, specializing in one of these areas.
By the mid 1960s degree programmes in International Relations, Management
Studies, Social Administration and Diploma and Certificate programmes in Management
Studies were added; and near the end of the 1960s, degrees in Accounting and in Applied
Social Studies (later re-designated Bachelor of Social Work). During the early 1970s, the
titles of the degree programmes were altered; each area of specialization in the B.Sc.
Economics degree becoming a separate degree. A certificate in Public Administration was
also introduced.
Teaching in the Social Sciences was extended to St. Augustine in 1962 and Cave Hill in 1963.
In 1977 a degree programme in Hotel Management was
established in the Bahamas; Part 1 of the programme being taught at the campuses and by
special arrangements, at the College of the Bahamas. A separate Tourism degree was
introduced in 1983. Diploma Programmes in Energy Management and Population Studies were
also introduced in 1983/84; and a new Diploma programme in Health Management in October
1984.
Since its establishment, the Faculty at Cave Hill has
expanded dramatically, and it now has three teaching departments, the Department
of Economics, the Department of Government, Sociology and
Social Work, and the Department of Management Studies.
The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of
Social and Economic Studies, Eastern Caribbean is also an arm of the Faculty of Social
Sciences, as is the recently established Crime and Criminal Justice
Research Centre.
The Faculty now accounts for 44% of all
registered students on the Campus and offers specials, major and minor programmes in
Accounting, Economics, Management Studies, Political Science, Psychology, Public Sector
Management, Social Work and Sociology, or varying combinations of these. The first
year of the BSc Hotel Management and the BSc Tourism Management programmes is also taught
in the Faculty after which, students transfer to the Centre for Hotel and Tourism
Management, Nassau, Bahamas.
Some significant developments in outreach activities include
the introduction of the Challenge Scheme in 1977 which enabled candidates in non-campus territories to sit
Part 1 of the degree courses without attending the campus. The second was the Certificate
in Public Administration which has been extended to non-campus territories, subject to the
provision of classroom instruction and availability of teaching materials. Both Schemes
referred to above, are Supported by the the UWI Distance Teaching Centre
(UWIDEC). More recently a certificate in Business Administration has been approved
primarily for non-campus territories. Finally, the Faculty is now participating in
the teaching of the BSc. Management degree by Distance.
In addition to our undergraduate programme, M.Phil. and
Ph.D. degrees are available in a range of disciplines. M.Sc. degrees are offered in
Accounting, Economics, Government and Sociology, and recently, Project Management and
Evaluation. A Master of Science in Social Sciences was introduced in 1985 and this is
offered within the Consortium Graduate School of Social Sciences. This school is a joint
collaborative effort of the University of the West Indies and the University of Guyana and
is located at the Mona Campus, UWI.
At all Campuses an MBA degree is offered on a part-time
basis, normally for Executives with at least five years managerial experience. The
Institute of Business (Mona, St. Augustine) and the Centre for Management Development
(Cave Hill) was established. The Centre offers the Executive masters in Business
Administration (EMBA) and the Executive Diploma in Management.
